FAQ Stop The Chew

Our proprietary Stop the Chew spray uses a safe, non-toxic and alcohol-free formula composed of extra strength bitter agents to deter chewing behavior in puppies and dogs.

However, they are also curious creatures, especially when young and developing or when bored. This is why they chew. Just like we might bite our nails or tap our foot when we're bored or anxious, many dogs chew until they are broken of this behavior.

Armed with the right information and strategy, and Stop the Chew Spray, you can in fact break them of this habit. Many pet parents have gone before you, and succeeded. And you will, too.

"If you're wondering ""Will this stuff really work for MY puppy?"" you're not alone!
Many tens of thousands of pet parents have asked the same question. The answer, for most of them, is Yes!

In a small percentage of dogs (usually less than 5%), a bitter deterrent may not be effective. Just like humans, dogs taste buds are unique. The exercise explained below will help you to determine whether the product will be effective for your pup. It also serves as a great ""primer"" for training with Stop the Chew.

TESTING THE EFFECTIVENESS:

STEP 1: Get a cotton ball, and soak it with Stop the Chew. You can spray liberally onto the cotton ball, or unscrew the spray nozzle and, holding the cotton ball up to the opening, tilt the bottle to soak the cotton ball. Make sure not to get the spray onto your hands, or to wash them if you do. Do not expose the liquid to your eyes or mouth. While not toxic, it's really potent!

STEP 2: Place the cotton ball in your dog's mouth. You can do this by offering it as a treat, or by placing in the floor in front of them. Most dogs will pick it up willingly.
While this may seem cruel, it is not. It's actually advised by veterinarians and pet trainers. The spray will not harm your dog.

STEP 3: It will be easy (and quick) to determine if your pup has an aversion to the taste. If they spit it out, curl their jowls, or simply refuse to pick the cotton swab up after smelling or licking it, this is a good sign!

In the rare occasion that your dog actually likes the taste, they may hold the cotton ball in their mouth, or attempt to run away with it. In this case, you should remove it from them carefully and dispose of it. "

"Furniture can be an easy target for dogs to chew on. It's everywhere, all around the house. They also see their humans sitting on it, laying on it, eating at it, etc.
Here are some tips to curtail chewing on Furniture:

STEP 1: Limit Access
If at all possible, limit your dog's access to furniture when you're not around. This might include crating or shutting of doors, or the use of a kennel or doggie gate to keep them in or out of certain areas.
While not forever, limiting access to things that are ""off-limits"" while they are learning can really help!

STEP 2: Spray Liberally
Spray your furniture liberally with Stop the Chew spray. We recommend spraying 2-3x per day for the first week, and then less frequently as your training begins to take hold. If possible, allow your dog to watch you spray the furniture.

STEP 3: Monitor & Correct
Monitor your dog closely to ensure their compliance. If you catch them chewing, use a word such as ""Stop"" or ""No"" to discipline them. Immediately re-apply the spray. It can take some time for these new rules to take hold. Some pups are more stubborn than others.

Remember, it's SO important that you provide things that your dog CAN chew on, while you're teaching them not to chew on the things you don't want them to chew.
Items such as bones, and toys made especially for puppies or heavy chewers can be great options. Reward them when they're doing a good job with lots of praise and affirmation. This will make the process go much more quickly and smoothly."

"Dogs can be fascinated by plants. They are always growing and changing, dropping leaves or changing colors. They see us water them and may want to get in on the fun.

"It is not uncommon for a puppy to chew on his favorite person. To them, it's a playful thing. After all, they see us petting them, grooming them and feeding them with our hands. Therefore, to playfully chew or ""bite"" is just normal. They can also be infatuated with toes! And let's be honest...toes are a quite intriguing.

Here are some tips to curtail chewing on people:
STEP 1: Limit Access

While you can't cut off access to your hands or feet completely, you can keep your dog away from them when they are chewing. If they begin to chew on you, remove them from the area. If they're in your lap, set them on the floor. If they're laying on the floor and chewing your toes, push them away gently and use a word like ""No"" or ""Stop"" to reinforce. Take control of the situation and don't allow them to sit there and gnaw on you.

STEP 2: Spray Liberally
Spray your hands or feet liberally with Stop the Chew spray.

**Please Note**
While the spray is non-toxic, it's pretty potent if inhaled or put in your mouth, so take care not to put your fingers (or toes!) in your mouth after spraying.

In most cases, you can spray once or twice on your fingers or toes, allow them to taste it, and reinforce with negative words such as ""No"" or ""Stop"". You shouldn't have to continue spraying your fingers each day... if this is the case, you are not taking enough control with your dog.

"Pleaase note: Chewing on fur can be an indication of a serious medical issue. Before continuing with training, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian.

Hot spots, bacterial infections or other dermatological conditions can lead dogs to chew on their fur. In addition, mites, fleas and ticks can be painful and bothersome and lead to chewing.
If your veterinarian is able to rule out any condition that is causing the chewing, you can in then feel sale in applying Stop the Chew spray directly onto your pet's fur.

STEP 1: Spray directly onto your pet's fur. Take care not to spray onto an open wound, or to spray into their eyes.

STEP 2: Monitor them closely to ensure adherence. We recommend spraying multiple times daily for the first week, and less frequently as the behavior subsides. If you notice them chewing on their fur, use a word such as ""No"" or ""Stop"" to redirect their behavior. Remember, it will take some time, and some dogs are more stubborn than others.
